We feel so lucky to be given the opportunity to obtain such a useful promotional tool for free, to use at our events within the community. It really helps us to visually showcase, with our branding, who we are and our mission. The quality is amazing, we love it so much!”

My first European river cruise experience

Thursday: My first European river cruise experience began with an easy journey by rail with Eurostar from Ebbsfleet to Lille where I connected with a TGV to Lyon.

On arrival Lyon Part Dieu railway station I was met by a chauffeur (all part of Tauck’s seamlessall-inclusive* package) and transferred to “Swiss Emerald”, which would remain berthed at Lyon until 1830 the following day.

           * A very important point to make is that Tauck pays all its employees a living wage – so tipping is not only unnecessary but discouraged!

Within five minutes of boarding I was ensconced in my Category 3 stateroom which, with its floor-to-ceiling windows was more comfortable and better equipped than most accommodation I have experienced aboard large ocean-going cruise ships.

I was then free to explore this beautifully furnished ship until the Champagne Welcome Reception at 1800 in the Panorama Lounge where we met the Captain, the Cruise Director Nick, our Tour Directors, Aurore and Denise, and were introduced to senior members of the ship’s various departments.

After which, following the customary safety briefing, we made our way to The Compass Rose Dining room (open seating) for dinner – our first experience of the amazingly varied gastronomic delights that were to be such a feature of our river odyssey.

The En-suite televisions have two movie channels and two different films are shown several times a day – including, on this cruise) such classics as “Marie Antoinette”,“Chocolat”,“Skyfall”, “War Horse” and “Les Miserables”.

And there is live music in the Panorama Lounge every evening.

The ship has a Bistro with a smaller, but nonetheless delightful menu, open for Luncheon and dinner every day (it was here that I had the best burger I have ever tasted and Crevettes Provencale that were to die for!).

For those not wanting the sumptuous breakfast offered in the main dining room 0700-0900), The Bistro provides continental breakfast from 0600-1000 daily.

           Friday:

A guided sightseeing tour of Lyon by coach included visits to the mediaeval Vieux Lyon, the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere and a chance to explore some of the old town’s secret pedestrian passages (traboules). The tour finished with a tour to the amazing Les Halles (market) for a food and wine-tasting.

All Tauck guests are provided with portable listening devices to take on tours – which enable one to hear every word spoken by the guide, without having to be huddled together in a crowd.

After Luncheon aboard ship, there was a guided excursion (one hour by coach) to the Beaujolais District for a wine-tasting at Chateau de la Chaize, followed by a tour of the Priory of Salles.

For those not wishing to take part in excursions, Tauck provides bicycles for those who prefer to explore on their own.

“Swiss Emerald” left Lyon at 1830 for the 166 km journey to Viviers (passing through a total of 8 locks) arriving at 0615 the following morning.

Entertainment this evening was provided by a wonderful French jazz singer, Yasmina.

Different guest musicians, artists and lecturers join the ship at various points throughout the cruise.

           Saturday

: A guided walking tour of Viviers (one of the best-preserved mediaeval towns in France) was followed with an introduction to (and had the opportunity to take part in) the French national game of Petanque (similar to Boules).
The ship left Viviers at 1330 for Arles (118 kms and 4 locks) – one of which, the Bollene Lock, is the deepest on the Rhone with a fall/rise of 76 feet! It was an amazing experience sitting on deck in the sun as the water level dropped and the ship descended into the vast concrete cavern

This afternoon Aurore gave an extremely interesting presentation on the history and origins of “Nougat of Montelimar” – complete with delicious samples!

After dinner, the Bar Manager, Gabor, treated us to a cocktail making demonstration in the Panorama Lounge – displaying talents that rivalled those of Tom Cruise in “Cocktail”!

Sunday

: A guided walking tour of Arles visited the Roman Arena and places where Vincent Van Gogh lived and painted.
After Lunch on board, the energetic had the opportunity to power-walk 2 miles to the Alyscamp Roman Necropolis (the final section or ancient Rome’s famous Aurelian Way) or take a leisurely bicycle ride.
A fascinating presentation by Denise this afternoon took us back to the Paris of the 1920s.
This evening we left the ship at 1700 for a one-hour coach trip to the Duchy D’Uzes where we dined at the 11

-century home of the Duc d’Uzes. On arrival at the chateau we were greeted with an open-air reception where cocktails and canapés were served to the accompaniment of an accomplished string trio.
A truly magical experience.

While we were dining at the chateau, “Swiss Emerald” travelled the 40 kms to Avignon where we rejoined her after dinner.

Monday

: This morning we were taken on a guided tour of the historical walled city of Avignon culminating with a visit to the Palais du Papes (the city was home to the papacy from 1309-1377). For those not interested in visiting the Palais du Papes there was a 45-minute mini-train tour of the city.

After luncheon we left by coach for a guided tour of the Pont du Gard – a remarkable example of ancient Roman construction and hydraulic engineering. The three-level bridge spanning the river Gardon carries the longest surviving portion of the 50 Km aqueduct built by the Romans to supply the ancient city of Nimes with water.

With the ship remaining in Avignon overnight many of us took the opportunity to take a leisurely stroll through the city after dinner.

Tuesday:

.This morning a coach tour through the scenic hills of Luberon- passing through the quaint hilltop town of Gordes en route to Roussillon – famous for its large deposit of ochre. Although no longer mined – the open cast ochre mines have been preserved as an historical site. Walking among the richly coloured outcrops of brilliant red, orange, yellow and brown ochre deposits was well worth the effort.

At 1300 the ship left for Chateauneuf du Pape – 28 miles away passing through just one lock en route.
A local accordion player was on board during the trip entertaining us on the forward sun deck with music that captured the essence of France.

Later in the afternoon our cruise director gave a short presentation, with the aid of a fascinating vintage slide show, celebrating Tauck’s 91 years.

This was followed by a short 2-hour coach trip to Les Vergers du Papes for a wine-tasting.

Dinner was served slightly earlier this evening to allow the crew to prepare for the hugely entertaining Crew Show (the best show on the Rhone!) which took place in the Panorama Lounge. It really was hilarious to see the people who were looking after us so well throwing themselves into their ‘performances’ with such gusto.

We passed on dessert at dinner as, prior to the Crew Show, Bettina, “Swiss Emerald’s” accomplished dessert and pastry chef was cooking and serving delicious Crepes Suzette in the lounge!

The ship sailed through the night to Tain l’Hermitage.

Wednesday

: This morning we travelled from Tain l’Hermitage by coach to Valence – the home of “Scook” – the renowned cooking school owned and operated by France’s only 3-star female chef, Anne Sophie Pic – where we took part in a cooking demonstration and learned about cheese and wine pairing.

On the way back to the ship we were dropped off at the famous chocolate store “Chocolatier Valhrona” – just 650 metres from the ship – where we able to sample (and purchase) from a staggering array of confectionery.
Before the ship sailed at 1630 to return (all too soon!) to our starting point, Lyon (91 kms and 4 locks), there was an opportunity to work off lunch with a walk across the bridge to Tournon and visit the Garden of Eden with its wonderful views of the valley or take a last bicycle ride along the banks of the Rhone.

Before dinner this evening there was a farewell reception in the lounge with a chance to thank the entire ship’s crew from Captain to dishwasher for looking after us so well.

: We disembarked after breakfast and were taken by private car to Lyon Part Dieu rail station for the train journey home. Guests flying home were transferred to the airport and those extending their stay in Lyon were transferred to their hotels.
I have been in the travel industry for more than half-a-century and this trip with Tauck was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my peregrinations.
Tauck’s organisation is second to none and every little detail is taken care of – all I had to do was relax and enjoy being pampered by some of the friendliest people I have ever encountered.

All in all, United Arab Emirates is the most fabulous, diverse, destination. If you are a culture vulture, I would head out of Dubai and visit one of the desert resorts. However, if you are looking for a cosmopolitan vibe, alongside a flavour of Arabia and can look beyond the abundance of building work, then, whether it be Creekside for the old town, Jumeirah beach, The Palm or Deira – Dubai has something special for you!!

The usual length of this tour is 13 days but we did a shorter version so started in Florence rather than Rome.

        DAY 1 – TUSCANY

After our British Airways flight from London City to Florence landed, we were whisked away into the Tuscan countryside. Due to it being too early in the season, the hotel which is usually used on the Backroads tours, Villa La Palagina, was not open yet and was just at the end of some refurbishment, but we got to have a look around and try to imagine what it would be like all finished and occupied.
It was a very traditional and beautiful Tuscan Villa with stunning grounds, fountains, a swimming pool and terraces. No two rooms are exactly the same due to the nature of the old building. Some were pretty small with small windows but if you stayed here you would probably not be spending much time in the room as it is too beautiful outside. I also have no doubt that the hospitality and surroundings would make up for this. And it’s next door to Sting’s house albeit down a very long driveway/lane!
After a site inspection there, we went on to Villa Il Palagio where we would be staying.
Still a traditional Tuscan building but more modern inside. Backroads would not normally use this hotel so I won’t go into too much detail!
Before dinner we had an Italian cooking class in the hotels kitchen. This was a lot of fun with banter between the chefs who didn’t speak a word of English, but it was all translated by our wonderful guide Isabelle. They showed us how to make several dishes, and a few of us did some chopping and mixing! We then ate the delicious creation and it was excellent! They printed out the recipes too so will definitely try them at home. The secret to Italian cooking apparently is balance of ingredients…not too much of anything so nothing is over powering.

DAY 2 – CINQUE TERRE – SANTA MARGHERITA

The weather was not kind to us on this day, with some heavy rain. But we still got to see some spectacular views across the UNESCO protected area comprising of 5 villages – “Cinque Terre”.
The 5 villages are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. We visited Monterosso, Vernazza and Manarola.
The landscape here is quite dramatic, with colourful buildings perched on the cliffs and up on hillsides so steep you can’t imagine how they got up there let alone built them!
We took a train between the villages as this is the only way to get from village to village. Buses and cars have to park quite far up the slopes. In the villages are quaint cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops and the odd church.
By early evening we arrived at Santa Margherita and our hotel

      Lido Palace

. This town in the Italian Riviera is an excellent alternative to Porto Fino without the exuberant price tag of the “hang out” for the rich and famous! We didn’t have much time here unfortunately and as it was raining until we finished dinner, we only managed a quick stroll along the beachfront. However if the weather was better I think a couple of nights here would be nice.

      DAY 3 – BAROLO – ALBA – CHERASCO

We headed north and inland to the region of Peidmonti, famous for rich red wines and luxurious cuisine. Oh go on then!
We were supposed to join a truffle hunt with a local farmer and his dog but it was too wet. So we settled for sitting down to a tasting of different products made with truffles…and wine!
After “truffle stuffing” we continued to Grinzane Cavour Castle and looked round the museum, followed by wine tasting. I was quite excited to taste the famous Barolo red wine being one of the most expensive wines in Italy. And it was amazing! Still wouldn’t pay the price tag though! So I bought a 9 euro equivalent!
That evening we stayed at the impressive Monastero Cherasco Somaschi Hotel. Try saying that after a few glasses of Barolo!
This is a converted Monastery right on top of a hill. They have restored this beautifully and was possibly my favourite hotel on this trip. The food was equally impressive as we sat down to a slow food dinner of 7 courses! And more wine!

DAY 4 – ASTI – LAKE ORTA – LAKE MAGGIORE

After leaving Cherasco we soon arrived in Asti, where we got to sip regional liquors called “Grappa”, complemented by chocolate and homemade nougat.
We then headed for the hills and the pristine lakes of northern Italy. I am glad I had the front seat of the coach on this day because the scenery was stunning. (However, wherever you sit on this small luxury coach you get a good view). We passed the rice growing region of Vercelli and stopped briefly at Lake Orta to take pictures! We wound our way along the roads circling the lakes, each corner offering a more beautiful scene than the next.
Backroads usually use The Majestic Hotel on Lake Maggiore but we were a couple of weeks early for the start of the season so it was not open yet. However, the manager showed us around, and it certainly lived up to its name. Standing on the terrace area right on the lake, we could imagine staying here and sipping a drink with the late afternoon sun on our faces. It’s in a good location too – a leisurely stroll along a tree lined promenade takes you into the town where you find restaurants and shops.

We then carried on around to the other side of the lake to our hotel – Hotel Dino. We had a nice room with a balcony overlooking the lake.
DAY 5 – LAKE MAGGIORE

The only transport we took today was a boat! We set sail for the Borromean Islands which are still used by the family for their summer retreats. The first was Isola Bella, with beautiful Baroque gardens with wandering peacocks and colourful birds. Then Isola Madre with the awe-inspiring Renaissance Villa. This was just incredible! Each room was incredibly ornate and sumptuous. The detail they went into to create such a luxurious palace… I would say for impressive historical buildings this came second only to the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican itself!
Then we hopped over to Isola dei Pescatori to a wonderful sea food restaurant.

      DAY 6 – LAKE GARDA – SIGURTA – VERONA

We left Lake Maggiore and made our way to the famous Lake Garda, through the Lombardia region, with quintessential Italian villages. We had a few hours to have lunch and wander around Desenzano del Garda. A small town on the shore of the lake with a market, quaint streets and many Gelato shops! You could sit and watch the world go by quite happily here. Our trail then took us to Sigurta Garden Park where the poppies and many other spring flowers were in full bloom.
Our final stop for the day was the city of Verona. Well what a little gem of a city this is! We stayed at Hotel Italia which was welcoming and had spacious rooms. It was about a 15 walk into the centre but it’s easy to find your way around Verona. There is a small Colosseum, a castle and of course many lovely eateries and cafes around a large square. We stopped at “Juliet’s balcony” but if you go there, take this visit with a pinch of salt because it is purely tourist attraction and a bit of fun. Who knows where the real one was! It is a great place if you want to do some clothes shopping though, with plenty of designer and high street shops for all budgets.

      DAY 7 – VALPOLICELLA – VENICE

After leaving Verona, we headed up into the hills of the Valpolicella region – the jewel in the crown of Italian wine making. We were not expecting such a beautiful wine tasting experience, but this was something else! The Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde estate is a small family run winery, and the owners could not have been more welcoming. It’s worth mentioning that large coach tours cannot get here due to the small road leading up to it, so it is very special. The traditional stone building with archway doorways, had a long wooden table, laid with a wonderful spread of local food which complemented the wine. There were cheeses, chutney, cold meats, bread and of course several different bottles of Valpolicella. And they were VERY generous with the tasting! I bought a couple of bottles and some peach and pistachio chutney, to take home as presents (well one was a present!!) We could have easily stayed there all afternoon but we were due in Venice!

Some hours later we arrived in Venice. We said goodbye to our wonderful driver Fabio – who had driven us safely the whole way, always with a huge smile on his face – and caught a water taxi to our hotel. We stayed at Hotel Principe which isn’t the usual Backroads hotel but it was very nice.
We visited the usual tour hotel ……. Right on the canal and had a Bellini in the sunshine.
The centre of Venice is a bit like a rabbit warren. You wander around tiny streets taking left, then right, then snake around part of the canal and then the path just stops… and you’re at a water taxi point! I would definitely recommend a map or using your phone to find your way around. However, if you have more time than we did it would be quite nice to get lost and take your time, stopping at the many souvenir shops and ice cream vendors.
We walked from our hotel to St Mark’s Square. This Square is much bigger than I expected and was very busy even in March. We had a quick look inside the Cathedral and then wandered around the quay front and of course had an ice cream! We then hopped on a water taxi which for 7 Euros took us back up the canal to our hotel. We didn’t get on a gondola unfortunately as they are very expensive (40 Euros each!)
All in all Venice is definitely a novel experience and has some very picturesque photo opportunities. But it is very touristy and expensive, so if you go with this in mind it’s worth visiting at least once but if you are after a more authentic Italian city I would go for Verona or Rome.

In summary, this is a trip true to its name “Italian Indulgence”! If you choose a Backroads tour you will fall in love with this country as I have. The food, wine, scenery, hotels, people and their outlook on life will leave you feeling simply…. “Bella”.

From Melbourne we took a two-hour trip to Phillip Island visiting Moonlit Sanctuary where we had the opportunity to hand-feed Kangaroos and Wallabies – after which we fed and watered ourselves at the Phillip Island Winery! A great opportunity to sample up to five locally produced wines accompanied by a delightful selection of breads and cheeses.

Although Australia and New Zealand are a long-way from the UK (any further and you are on the way home!) both are well worth the long flight. For those with limited time a two-week itinerary (one week in New Zealand and a week in Australia) is viable, just. If you have longer, then you may wish to consider visiting other Australian States including Queensland, Northern Territory and even Western Australia – especially since this year, 2017, see the introduction by Qantas of the first ever non-stop flight between the UK and Australia – from Heathrow to Perth!

September – we transferred from Delhi to Agra, a 5 hour drive by coach. The journey can be done by train, and would be a good idea for the experience. We stayed at The Taj Gateway Hotel, and my room had a view of the Taj Mahal which was built in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, Mughal emperor Shah Jehan’s beloved wife. The mausoleum, built entirely of white marble is decorated with elaborate geometric forms and inlay work.

The Taj Mahal was a highlight of my trip. An iconic building, it provokes an emotional atmosphere, and is every bit as special as you might have heard. Naturally, we took a group photo on ‘Princess Diana’s’ bench, as it is now known. Something I hadn’t realised before my trip is that the locals always wanted to photograph us! Visiting this wonderful place is an experience I will never forget and it was particularly splendid at sunset.

We also visited the Agra Fort and the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah – this two-storied tomb bearing mosaics in inlaid semi-precious stones is considered the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner at The ITC Mughal in Agra. I would highly recommend this hotel as it has a wonderful spa, and the dining experience in the Peshwari Restaurant, where we ate without cutlery, was amazing.

Our arrival at The Samode Palace, after a somewhat rickety approach road, was jaw dropping. I cannot think of a better way to put it as the hotel was lit with fairy lights and we walked on a red carpet to the entrance. We were made so welcome and this property is unique. Every room is different. There are 2 swimming pools, one being an infinity pool. The spa is excellent and the décor, from the days the property was a palace, is stunning. It is peaceful and tranquil and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. We stayed here for 3 nights, and during this time we took a camel ride to the Samode Palace hotel where we had a swim and lunch. We also walked through the local village of Samode where my lasting memory will be the radiant school children’s faces.

In Jaipur, the pink city, we visited stunning hilltop forts and glorious palaces. Amber Fort is in a particularly beautiful setting. We ascended the fort on an elephant, and this was the only time that I felt I was doing something against my principles. The elephants did not appear to be happy and I would have preferred to have travelled by jeep. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful place. The glistening Hall of Mirrors and Maharaja’s apartments decorated with murals and mosaic are a must see. We also visited the Royal Observatory or Jantar Mantar as it is known locally, and then the City Palace where we saw rare manuscripts, armoury and costumes. We enjoyed a traditional lunch at the Samode Haveli followed by a tour of the ITC Rajputana. We also spent a most enjoyable half hour at a traditional colourful bazaar.

September – a 5 hour transfer from The Samode Palace to Delhi. We had a superbly delicious meal at The Imperial Hotel, Delhi. The Imperial Restaurant – The Spice Route – was a delight for the taste buds. It is in the top ten of the Conde Nast list. A fusion of different style food from India, Thailand, and Indonesia cooked by a famous Thai chef called Veene. I was extremely impressed with the food in India. We experienced so many wonderful flavours. The rooms we saw during our site visit at the Imperial were immaculate.

      Thursday:

My first European river cruise experience began with an easy journey by rail with Eurostar from Ebbsfleet to Lille where I connected with a TGV to Lyon.

While we were dining at the chateau, “Swiss Emerald” travelled the 40 kms to Avignon where we rejoined her after dinner.

The three-level bridge spanning the river Gardon carries the longest surviving portion of the 50 Km aqueduct built by the Romans to supply the ancient city of Nimes with water.

.This morning a coach tour through the scenic hills of Luberon- passing through the quaint hilltop town of Gordes en route to Roussillon – famous for its large deposit of ochre.

The night market is a must. Hua Hin is a typical sprawling Thai town to be honest, with little beauty, but with the massages thrown in at approximately £6 anywhere along the high street, and the relaxing aura of the hotel, it was a lovely contrast to the Bangkok madness. However, I wouldn’t have missed Bangkok for anything.
The Centara Hotel Resort and Spa has many returning guests, and I can highly recommend it. There is a separate Villa area where the guests have their own plunge pool, but I was very happy with my Deluxe Room which was just a couple of steps from the Garden Pool. Thailand is a great holiday destination and can suit many different people. I personally look forward to my next trip. Judy Gibb Senior Travel Consultant

  Magical Majestic Malaysia!

  Day 1 BA Flight

We were all delighted to receive Club World upgrades on check-in and, after a short delay of 1 hour, we settled in to our very comfortable Club cabin with a friendly and attentive crew. The group were served two meals dinner and breakfast and in-flight ‘kitchen’ for snacks.

  Tips:

The seating configuration in Club World on the 777 means that window seats are rear facing, with the next seat front facing, but there is an excellent privacy screen. Clients in a window seat would need to straddle the flatbed of the next seat to get in/out. Central seats E&F have no privacy screen so good for couples, but may be slightly intimate for strangers, as almost like a double bed.

  Arrival KLIA

KLIA is a modern, sprawling airport including a train to immigration but the route is well signed.

  Tips:

Nervous travellers can have airside meet & greet for a fee.

Business and First head left at immigration desks for own channels with minimal queuing – you are being directed right so you must look out for this and point out you are eligible!

The transfer to the city centre is 65 kilometres and around 1 hour & 20 minutes, dependent on traffic.

  Tips:

An alternative transfer is my train and halves the time!

Exchange rates have very little variance at banks, 6.2 during our stay, but hotels have lower rates.

Day 2 The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur

We checked-in for 2 nights and all allocated the original Majestic Wing and Governor Suites with living area, spacious bedroom and bathroom with claw feet roll top bath. Benefits also include full butler service, complimentary transport within 10 KM, with a mobile given for return journey! Free mini bar (wine, beer, minerals, nuts) 6-8 pre-dinner drinks.

Only 50 rooms are allocated in this adult only Majestic Wing. The building was bought by YTL 7 years ago, it took 3 years to renovate to its former glory days of 1932 and also to build the Tower Wing with a further 250 rooms – all rooms were beautifully appointed with classic styling and a contemporary flair including roll top baths and amazing Mangosteen toiletries.

  Room tips:

We loved the Majestic Wing and its exclusivity but for the Tower Wing the lead in room was fabulous, and if celebrating a special occasion, then the Junior Suite was most popular with the group.

We had a buffet dinner at Contango, an amazing buffet with live, interactive cooking stations – Asian fusion, sushi and international choices priced at £15/£18 for lunch and £18/£20 for dinner (midweek/weekend).

  Tips

: Wine and beer packages with dinner buffets – £11 self-service and unlimited!

Amazing afternoon teas are served too they are the same tea but priced according to the location taken in from the Colonial Cafe at £9 up to the Orchid Conservatory at £17

  Day 3 – City Tour

We started our city tour with a translation of Kuala Lumpur as ‘muddy estuary’, starting life as 2 trading posts in 1857 and grown with tin-mining success.

We visited independence square, the river point where KL began, The Palace, ASEAN park and memorials and the National Mosque. The morning was a great combination of historic buildings, botanical gardens and KL heritage.

        Shangri-La – Kuala Lumpur

Site inspection of this centrally located hotel which is 30 years old but was fully renovated in 2009. Great use of views to tropical gardens and cascading waters give the hotel an oasis in the city feeling.

  Tips:

If you want to go up Petronas book ahead to avoid queues and also as daily visitors are currently limited to 500 – only currently £13

  China Town

       – is a must do a very vibrant and colourful market. There are ridiculously priced ‘genuine fakes’ to be purchased from watches to bags and trainers to T-shirts.

  Tips:

Barter hard, we made most purchases at a third of the first price given!

Back at the sanctuary of the Majestic we had pre-dinner drinks at Smokehouse – a gentleman’s club setting with cigar menu and smoking jackets! There was an amazing and unique cocktail list here, each with an explanation and a nod to the history of KL. There is also a Barbour shop, gentleman’s outfitter and a cinema room in this area.

We had dinner at the Colonial Cafe and were treated to a fine-dining 6-course menu with champagne and wine pairing. The food was delicious with family recipes from the YTL owner’s wife. Service was exemplary and Joel was magnificent. We were hosted throughout by Sharezal, Director of Concierge, who entertained us with stories of attaining his ‘Golden Keys’.

  Day 4

  We visited

        Batu Caves

a must see and highlight of the trip! Batu means rock and the caves were discovered in 1878. In 1900 a dream led to a shrine being built on the site and in the 1960’s the temples were created. There are three caves – able visitors should climb the 272 steps up to the ‘light cave’ with a further 100 steps within.

More intrepid cavers can book to wear protective clothing and have a guide to take them to the ‘dark cave’

Less able visitors can pay £8 to visit the ‘museum cave’ at the base.

  Tip:

Do not carry and bags, especially plastic, to attract the monkeys!

We started our winding journey up to the Cameron Highlands, approximately 4-5 hour journey, with bamboo basket making, waterfalls and stunning scenery en route. We had a light lunch at the Golf Club – a three course lunch of soup, sandwich and fries, ice-cream and fresh strawberry juice or beer cost around £5 each!

  Check-in Cameron Highland Resort

The history of the property dates back to 1938 when it was a base for the army generals to live. Formally the Merlin hotel until YTL bought it in 2000 and restored it to its former glory. It has a Tudor colonial, ambience with wood panelling, two open fires, china artefacts and heritage furnishings. The hotel overlooks the golf course but is also adjacent to the main road and some traffic noise can be heard in the room.

Dining choices are informal Gunbei which is Asian fusion Steam-pot style or fine dining in the Dining Room.

Rooms are all beautifully appointed with the only real differentials being size.

The Spa has an amazing array of treatments including a signature tea bath ritual before all treatments. We then had a little hike to see are area and called in at the oldest hotel in the region The Smokehouse for a cup of tea.

  Tip:

Clients with more time can play golf, do proper trekking with a naturalist guide, horse-riding and quad biking or just spend time visiting the strawberry farms and tea plantations.

After a fire lighting ceremony, where we were given a torch flame to light the fire and make a wish, we then had a fine-dining dinner at The Dining Room which was superb! Starters were approx £8 and main courses ranged from £10 to £16 with some speciality dishes around £48, for two to share!

Breakfast was served in the Dining Room with a buffet selection for some continental elements. But juices, hot drinks, pastries were all silver service and hot breakfast was ordered. Over and above the usual breakfast choices included salmon and aged-brie omelette and corned beef hash, representing nods to the history.

Cameron Highlands are Ideal for those with an interest in the history of colonial times – little England Tudor style architecture- stunning scenery – cooler climate – to see the garden of Malaysia & tea plantations.

  Tip:

Avoid travelling to/from CH during weekends – winding roads are very congested with local traffic. Look out for the ethnic tribal people – very short in stature, darker colouring and curly hair!

  Our first stop was the

        Time Tunnel

       – a museum of items through the years – from tribal blow pipes through to barbers chairs – quite a fun visit! We then visited a

        tea plantation

, stunning scenery of the tea terraces.

        Kea Market

a traditional local market mainly fruit & vegetables but also a chance to buy local strawberry jam and tea and a nice stroll through the hustle and bustle of highland life. Next stop an interactive visit to the

        Butterly Farm

. The guide was passionate and wanted the experience to be very interactive!

  Tip:

Worth upgrading entrance to ‘close encounter’ but be specific what you do or DON’T want placed on you. As whilst some are happy with a butterfly on the arm they may not want a snake around their neck or a scorpion on their chest!

  Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Penang

       – this translates as feeling of love! This is a beautiful resort which is 44 years old but has been recently renovated. The star is the 150 year old gardens which encompass sprawling grounds, century old trees and has won many conservation awards. This makes this an oasis within the hustle and bustle of Penang. It even has a pitch and putt golf course on site! The gardens lead to the Batu Feringgi beach stunningly flanked by large granite boulders. All pools are salt water for their ‘green’ credentials. We were allocated well appointed, light and spacious Garden Wing rooms with pool/sea views.

Guests staying in the Rasa Wing rooms all have additional benefits of complimentary mini bar on arrival, own restaurant for a la carte breakfast or for purchased fine dining for other meals. They also have access to a lounge for refreshments in the day plus pre dinner drinks and canapés 6-8, a designated area for children. This wing also has an adult only pool. We were hosted by Aida Rashid, Director of Sales.

Our journey from Penang to Pangkor Laut Resort started on the highways and then we were on country roads – journey time 4-5 hours. On arrival at Lumut we had welcome drinks and cold towels at the PLR marina terminal, a very relaxed way to await the boat transfer. Our check-in was also done here and cases tagged ready for delivery to our rooms and we were given a resort map. What a stunning resort, arriving by boat you are blown away that this entire 300-acre island is your resort. Emerald waters lap beaches framed by granite boulders with a backdrop of ancient jungle, which is millions of year old. The jetties and over water villas add to the complete uniqueness that is Pangkor Laut Resort.

The iconic Sea and Spa villas are all over-water to offer complete relaxation with a veranda and two sun beds. Another feature is the bath with 3 aspects to the sea. No over water villas have televisions but do have a music system and the option to have a ‘Hudl’ for mobile wi-fi access, if wanted. The 22 Spa villas are located at the far side of the resort for tranquillity and relaxation, with the 19 Sea Villas more central. The top suite is the elevated Pavarotti Suite – although there is an elevator to assist some of the climb guests would still need to be fit and also for that reason all 52 of the Hill Villas would not suit families or clients with walking difficulties for whom one of the 36 Garden Villas would be recommended. The 8 Beach villas have stunning views of the sea.

After a quick freshen up we then had a tour of the estates and saw two of The 8 Estates – For clients who want complete privacy and discretion these amazing four room residences with 2 butlers, private chef for chosen cuisine preferences and private pool are the epitome of luxury for discerning travellers. We were spoilt to have a champagne drinks reception at one of the beach Estates where the GM Ross Sanders, hosted us like royalty. Ross then took us for dinner at Uncle Lim’s for a feast of delicious Chinese food and the honour of meeting Uncle Lim, who, aged 81, is employee number 001 and a legend in YTL and Malaysia! The food was fantastic and the setting and service sublime. We had a nightcap both nights at Royal Bay Beach Club where a very relaxed and quiet atmosphere prevails, so most guests most return to their villas after dining and perhaps watch the moonlit waters lap their villas from their bathtubs.

Breakfast was an Asian inspired buffet with cooking stations. Speciality coffees were served and there was a juice station to make smoothies etc.

We then set off on our ‘Chefs experience’. This involves a boat to Pangkor and a visit to the local fish market, noodle maker and anchovy factory. There is a short opportunity to shop before returning to the boat to the fish farm. Here we caught our lunch by rod fishing 4.5 kilos of red snapper! We also fed some of the fish pens which could have over 200 in each net. On our return we were met on the jetty with cold towels and drinks. We then proceeded to the spa for a 40 minute bathing ritual to freshen up after our adventure. We then commenced our cookery lesson at The Straits. Our cuisine was Indian but, reflecting Malaysia’s melting pot of Asian fusion cuisines, this class can be Chinese or Malaysian too. We had a hands-on experience and then two private cabanas to dine on all our creations and our catch of the day, which had been cooked by the professionals!

We disembarked for a private flame-lit dinner on the beach at Emerald Bay. The sublime menu included steak & local lobster-divine!

After an amazing early morning Yoga session with resident therapist Widyawaty we then had another delicious breakfast. Following our sustenance we embarked on our jungle trek with naturalist Aris who pointed out all the flora & fauna and resident wildlife. The islands is also home to Hornbills, Sea-eagles, 3-6 feet monitor lizards, snakes, bats etc.

We trekked through the jungle and arrived for lunch at Emerald Bay where our final private dining experience had been set up for us. We all toasted an amazing trip and particularly our stay in paradise at PLR and returned to our villas to freshen up to leave. The whole staff came to send us off and every one of us prayed that they can return one day!

On arrival back at Lemut Marina our trusty guide Jeffrey was ready to take us back to KLIA – a 4 hours journey by coach and approx. 3.5 by car. We had a short comfort stop and arrived at the airport ready for check-in to open. You check in at level 5 and after immigration you take the train to the departure gates. The gate was given at the time of check-in so this was quite relaxed.

  Overview

Malaysia is a land of contrasts that has so much to offer and an abundance of natural beauty. The difficulties with the local economy and Malaysian Airways and the current exchange rate, makes Malaysia extremely good value and the standards of accommodation seen with both YTL and Shangri-La was fantastic. YTL gained all of our admiration as a unique and empathetic brand, whether they are conserving the history, buildings, culture, people, wildlife, or nature at their resorts they seem to take extreme care and attention with every detail. Every property that we visited had its own character and the staff became animated with lots of stories attached to each property. We were all endeared by the brand and its duty of care as custodian of both the resorts and the comfort and service for the guests.

WOW! What a fabulous educational trip to the Maldives I have just been on, feeling very lucky right now!
One word – Amazing!
I honeymooned at LUX* Maldives 2 years ago so when the opportunity arose to visit several other islands with LUSSO I was very much looking forward to comparing them all. The trouble is they are all beautiful and all so different making it hard to compare so how do you choose? The answer is you come to me because now I have the first hand knowledge to ensure I choose the right island to match you requirements.
I was pleasantly surprised by the weather. At this time of year I was expecting high humidity and lots of rain but we had glorious weather throughout.
Another pleasant surprise was how well some islands cater for families offering 2 to 3 bedroom beach/ water villas.
One of my highlights has to be seeing a turtle whilst snorkelling which was a first for me!
To give you a snap shot I visited 8 islands in 7 days and 5 of which I have highlighted below…

Skiing in Meribel, Trois Vallees by Colin and Patsy

The post Skiing in Meribel, Trois Vallees by Colin and Patsy appeared first on Select World Travel.

We have skied in many parts of the World, but it’s hard to equal Meribel for the sheer quantity and variety of skiing, and it remains our favourite resort.
It is the middle valley of the 3 Vallees ski area, which with a claimed 600km of pistes and 180 lifts is one of the largest ski areas of all , and certainly the best joined-up. It is the middle not just geographically, but also in style. Go to the left hand valley, Courchevel, for French fashion and cuisine, or to see how Russians can spend money. Or to the right hand valley, up to Val Thorens, for the highest altitudes, up to 3230m, high speed glacier skiing , and drinking with the Dutch.
Meribel valley has something for everyone . Gentle slopes for beginners, close to on-piste refreshment stops, are particularly good down at Altiport, and many of the children in our family, and some oldies , have learned to ski or ride here. Many good slopes for intermediates as you head up towards Mottaret, with places to stop in the sun for coffee, a drink or lunch. For the energetic and experienced, tackle the long black runs of Mont Vallon at the head of the valley.
The après ski is lively down in the main resort, and at Rond Point in late afternoon. A wide variety of restaurants and shopping is one of the features of Meribel, easy to stroll around and served by good free shuttle bus service which links all parts of the resort and main lifts. It is also easy on the eye, planning controls have enforced a pretty Alpine chalet style of architecture, so there are no ugly tower blocks or experimental architecture.
What do we like most about Meribel?

                    What are the snags ?

Mark Warner is an activity holiday specialist with 8 Mediterranean Resorts and 12 Ski resorts.
I got the chance to sample 2 of their Mediterranean Resorts in May – San Lucianu Resort in Corsica and Perdepera Beach Resort in Sardinia.
After a quick Easyjet flight from Gatwick we arrived on the French island of Corsica. The sun was shining and it was warm but very windy. As the coach turned into the entrance of “San Lu” – as it’s affectionately known to the staff, we later found out – all the staff was on the steps waving us in with a smile. Certainly a warm welcome and we had the resort to ourselves as it was a week before they opened for the season.
San Lucianu resort is in San Nicolao on the East Coast of Corsica. The mountains are very close to the sea, so the hotels backdrop is quick dramatic. When we were there, there was a misty cloud covering the peak of the mountain just behind the hotel, yet the beach was sunny.
After settling into our rooms and admiring the sea views, we had a lovely lunch on the terrace. Then it was down to the beach for a briefing of all the activities on offer. There’s windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, tennis, mountain biking and an extensive fitness program from Zumba to Stretch classes.
Children are extremely well catered for here, with activity programs for all ages, from a crèche for the tiny ones, right up to sports tuition for the older kids.
I signed up for windsurfing and sailing the following day! Then we went and got ourselves a cocktail and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon sun.
It was a good job we did because the next day was rainy and windy! But we went out anyway! Despite the rain we had a good giggle trying to get up on the windsurf! The crew were brilliant and enthusiastic.
After burning a few calories we had a lovely buffet lunch. Although the hotel is a 3* the food was certainly 4*, and exceeded all our expectations.
Mark Warner put on a good party for us that night, party games, cocktails and lots of dancing – a jolly time was had by all!
The following day there was an excursion to the little seafront town of Sant Florent. An hour on the twisty turny mountain roads didn’t do our fragile heads any good, but the fresh sea air and an anti pasti snack stop and we were right as rain! It was a pretty area which felt like a little piece of the South of France, with big yachts moored in the harbour and boutique shops and cafes lining the promenade.
After a 3 night stay we then travelled across to Sardinia.
The ferry only took 1 hour and the sea was kind to us! We then had a rather long, but scenically beautiful coach trip from the port to our next resort. Sardinia is very green with rolling hills and mountainous peaks, quaint villages and stunning beaches.
Perdepera Beach resort is on the East Coast of Sardinia. The nearest town is Tortoli, but the resort is peacefully secluded, with again, mountains right behind it and set on a beautiful white sand beach.
The rooms were all bungalow style scattered across the resort grounds, and very spacious.
We had the same range of activities here, except for the fitness classes. I went on a couple of bike rides. One was pretty easy into the nearest sleepy village. The other was more strenuous, climbing up the mountain, overlooking beaches and coves on one side and down into green valleys the other.
We also had an excursion to Tortoli to look round the many boutique shops, and had a lovely seafood lunch. One morning was spent having some tuition on our tennis serves…with a few glasses of pims!
The kids club and children’s’ program is equally good as the other resort. The play houses and slides on the lawn remind me of my little boy – he would have loved it here!
Our last evening was spent having a leisurely al la carte dinner by the pool, which was lit invitingly.
The food on the whole trip be it in the resorts or out at local restaurants had been superb! Foodies would not be disappointed!
Flying home was quite novel having a whole British Airways plane to ourselves. Mark Warner charter BA flights and as they had just flown the first holiday makers of the season out that morning, we were the only ones going home! All in all, a nice end to a lovely trip. Highly recommend both islands and Mark Warner to the right clients. However, I would love to return to sample some of the higher end hotels….maybe next time!
